Is having Money Evil?

There seems to be two very opposite views when it comes to money. One view says having money is evil, and then there is another view who teaches that people should strive to become very wealthy, like so many Pagan Christian teachers we see today who are multi-millionaires!

I believe both camps need to find a middle ground and balance.

Satan gets people so focused on money, that money becomes an idol. And on the flip side, Satan loves deceiving the people to believe that having money is evil.  Money is not evil, but the love of money is evil, and it’s what you do, or do not do with it that can become a problem.

After all, money is given for value and services rendered. How can giving good value and providing valuable service be bad or evil?  And the more value and service you provide, the more money is given to you.  Those who are poor financially, do not provide much, if any, value or service. A personal financial situation is directly correlated to their service and value given to others.

What matters is what does a person do with the money once they receive it.

There are many wealthy people in the Bible that Yahweh blessed. It’s important to use the money and invest it in areas that Yahweh leads the person to use it in. To use the money as a servant and not have the money use you.

If you have enough money, you don’t think about it very much. But when you have too little, you think about it all the time and it becomes your god.  You serve money, money doesn’t serve you. But it’s the same people who claim that they don’t want to have money, who serve money the most and who think about it all the time.

And Abraham, Issac and Jacob are among the most significant people in the Old Testament, and Yahweh blessed them all to become very wealthy. You can read about Isaac for example in, Genesis 26:12-14, 20

Genesis 26:12-13 Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because Yahweh blessed him. He became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.

The effect money has on your emotional life depends on your attitude toward it. If you feel that you have too little, money can become an obsession for you, and it can dominate your thinking, feelings and actions. Arguments over money are a major reason for marital breakdown. Problems with money are the primary reason for business collapse, the ruination of friendships and psychosomatic illnesses of all kinds. It’s not uncommon for people to even kill themselves over money problems. And lack of money drives people to commit horrid crimes.

I think the reason a lot of people believe having money is evil is when Yahshua said, “it is easier for camel to walk through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt. 19:24).  However, some people say it was possible for a camel if it if crawled on its knees to fit through the “eye of the needle” which was located in Jerusalem. But was Yahshua referring that to the whole mankind?  If so, then we have wealthy people in the Bible who Yahweh blessed that will be lost and thrown into the lake of fire (Gehenna)!

And if that is a reference for the whole world, that would mean every single Yahweh believer would never provide any value or service and would be broke and have zero money, and all the pagans and non-believers would have all the money. And in that case, who would pay for the buildings for fellowship, printing of Bibles, helping the needy and so on?

So why is it that most of those who worship money the most and do nothing but talk about, focus, argue about, and think about money, are the same people who claim they don’t want money? I believe it comes from false conditioning and misunderstanding of Scripture.

Yet there is a problem with the opposite too, especially with these false “prosperity preachers”, who live in million dollar homes, and who wear very expensive clothing, drive very expensive cars etc. When a person focuses only on becoming wealthy for personal gain, then they slip into worshiping money too.  A person should always realise that no human owns any money anyway, all the money belongs to Yahweh.  And those who are wealthy should tithe and give back most of it to Yahweh’s work and the building of Yahweh’s kingdom.  If they don’t, then that person serves money and money has become their god and idol for personal gain and satisfaction.

We at Yahweh’s House Ministries do not support false preachers like Joel Osteen, Benny Hinn, Joyce Meyers etc, who hoard and store millions and millions of dollars for their own personal collection and encourage others to do the same.  We do NOT believe these type of people are sealed with the Father!  Can you visualise the Messiah, Disciples and righteous men and women being resurrected today and living, dressing, having plastic surgery etc, like these preachers?  We cannot!  Do you really believe these people are setting a righteous example for others to follow?  We do not!

I also think what’s important is to deal with life as it is, not as you wish it were, or could be. Most people live in a world of partial self-delusion, or even fantasy, with regard to money. They wish, hope, and pray about their financial futures while at the same time, deep in their soul, they idolise it. Some are well meaning, yet they don’t realise that they have become servants of money and that money has taken place over Yahweh in their lives.  They trust more in money to provide their daily needs than they trust in Yahweh to provide for their daily needs. That is a trap people should be cautious of falling into.

But the reality is that in this world we mostly receive in life not what we need, but what we deserve. Deserve comes from 2 Latin words, the prefix “De” and “Servus”. The 2 words combined mean “From Service.”  So if you provide a great righteous service, you will receive a lot in return.  But sow bad seeds, and you will receive a rotten harvest!

One of the most common obstacles to achieving financial security and freedom is a deep-seated belief that somehow money is wrong and evil and that people who have a lot of it are inherently evil. If that was true, that would mean that all the people in Scripture that Yahweh blessed to be wealthy would all be evil, but we know this is not the case.

This belief that having money is somehow evil is not based on any Biblical foundation. It goes back to early childhood conditioning when the growing child is often told this because of other people’s desire to rationalize away their own financial lacking and failures.

And as stated earlier, how can it be wrong or evil to give valuable service to others?  After all, that’s how we are given money as an exchange in the first place. And money itself cannot be evil, for it’s only paper and ink, or electronic money.

Before money existed, they used sheep and oils for example to exchange for value and service rendered.  So how can a sheep or oil be evil?  The Bible never says “money is the root of all evil”, it says “the love of money is the root of all evil.”  And who seems to love money the most? The people who always argue about it and think about it and who lack enough to pay their bills and pay their own way.

It takes money to buy shelter, transport, clothes, supplies for the children, food and most of all, it takes money to build Yahweh’s kingdom. Money seems to flow to and seems to be attracted to people who treat it well and use it to serve Yahweh and who obey Him. And money tends to flow toward those people who can use it in the most productive ways to produce valuable goods and services, and who can invest it to create employment and opportunities that benefit others.   However, money also can flow to unrighteous people or false preachers, for we believe Satan can also help make someone rich to misuse money to serve Satan and his kingdom.

At the same time, it seems that eventually money flows away from those who use it poorly, or who spend it in non-productive ways and who always focus on lack of money and always think about how they don’t have enough to pay their bills.  History has shown that many wealthy people have ended up completely broke later in life.

Be perfectly honest with yourself with regard to money. Pretending that you don’t care about money when you really do will only make you unhappy and lead you into worshiping it.

So begin today with a paradigm-shift and thank Yahweh for what you do have, and focus instead of the blessings in your life. For you will attract into your life that which you are grateful for and thank Yahweh for.

And ask yourself this question: “What would I do if I inherited $1 million?”  Would I still say “I don’t want money, I will give it all away?”  If so, who would you give it to? If having that money is evil, does that mean you will pass this “evil” unto another person who may use it selfishly and unrighteously?

Why not instead say: “Dear Yahweh, I will make this money serve you and for your will and your kingdom. I will tithe on it, and give offerings, and use the majority of YOUR money, that belongs to you anyway to invest in my families health and righteous future and to further your kingdom.”

And what if you awoke one morning with a burning desire to start a charity organisation. What would happen if it become very successful and many people wanted to support it’s great cause, and all of a sudden you began receiving thousands of dollars each month in donations?  What would you then do?  Would you close down the charity claiming it was too evil for you to receive so much money every month from the donations of others?

And how much is too much?  Would you say someone who has $1 million is evil?  What about $900,000?  Is that evil? If so, how much is too much? Perhaps you may say that anyone who has $500,000 has too much money and can’t be saved?  If that is the case, what about a person who had $499,999? Would they not be evil because they have $1 dollar less?  So how much does a person have to have for you to believe they are evil and cannot be saved?  How much is the maximum amount of money a person can have for them to be able to be saved?  So you mean anyone with $1 more than the figure you mention cannot be saved? As you can see, where does it all stop?

So, I repeat a statement I made earlier, be perfectly honest to yourself with regard to money. Pretending that you don’t care about money when you really do will only make you unhappy and lead you into worshiping it, and having you serve money, not money serve you.

And once a person let’s go of their obsession about money, and stops thinking about bills and money all day long, amazing things begin to happen. The floodgates of heaven will open and Yahweh can bless you, because Yahweh has become your number 1 focus and the true Elohim and priority of your life. But only if you commit to obedience to Yahweh, including keeping the Sabbath holy etc.

Never forget, ALL the money on Earth belongs to Yahweh.  Yahweh wants righteous people to distribute it in areas He wants it used in.  And sadly, many pagans and non-believers have a lot of money and misuse it.  So how about we focus on investing Yahweh’s money wisely and stop being threatened by it.

This article was not written to encourage people to become millionaires or get rich, in fact as I have hinted earlier, I strongly oppose the false “Prosperity Gospel” message that so many false teachers in the world are preaching today. This is best left to Yahweh. If Yahweh wants you to have a lot of money, then He will provide opportunities to bless you with it because He will know you are righteous and sensible about it.  He will not bless someone with money if their motives are unrighteousness, and they do not handle money with maturity and righteousness.   Only Satan may do this.

This article was written to encourage people to stop focusing on money and bills all day long, as this leads to idolising it and worshiping it as a god, usually unknowingly and ignorantly.  And it’s many well meaning people who are at the biggest risk to worship money and serve money due to false and misleading beliefs and intents about money.  They reason that they are doing it for their children’s future etc, yet placing themselves in financial, emotional, psychological, physical risk in the meantime and many get sick doing this, their health and the health of their children declines. Remember, it ALL belongs to Yahweh, and if you have this mind-set, then Yahweh can use you to distribute HIS money where He wants it.

Many people fall into the trap of pursuing and wanting to accumulate property, materialism and money as if it’s their god!  Many people will not help a needy person, because they are too busy trying to save money for themselves.

Some try to store up their property, material and money possessions on Earth to such a degree that they rather do without quality medical and dental attention for themselves in the process so they can save every dollar towards their worldly properties and possessions!  Or all their money is tied up into their investments that they are continually broke financially for medical and personal needs that are important, so they do without and place themselves in danger and risk. And many place themselves one pay packet away to being homeless!   They will even place themselves and their children at financial risk and health risk so they can accumulate this wealth.  Many people have lost everything and put themselves and their own children onto the streets because they were so obsessed with putting themselves at risk during this pursue for wealth. But this is an unrighteous, unreasonable and disobedient way to live!

So please change your focus away from trying to build a great property portfolio so you can brag to your family and friends about how successful you are, focus away from all material and money possession and obsession, focus away from your lack of money and bills, and instead make Yahweh your number one priority.  And focus not on lack of money, paying phone and car bills, food, clothing, and your rent or mortgage, and so on. Instead focus on giving quality and righteous service and adding value to people and their lives. Do this, and all else will fall into place, and Yahweh promises that if you stop trying to pursue worldly riches and possessions that He will take care of your needs.  And if Yahweh was to bless you with great property and financial wealth, it would be for the reason of you building property to help the homeless for example and doing many Yahweh righteous things with all that money you have.

Finding a balance is the right thing to do.

Matthew 6:24-34: “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other…”Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if Yahweh so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O men of little faith? Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day’s own trouble be sufficient for the day.

Conclusion: It is not evil to be wealthy if Yahweh has blessed you with this because He trusted you to do the righteous thing with the money to help others and further the kingdom of heaven.  It’s not the money that is evil, it is the love of money and the bad intent and bad motives what you do with it.  It’s important to not live your life with wealth creation and money as your main highest priority, for that will lead to unrighteousness and eventually destruction!  Do not compromise living a good giving and righteous life for the expense of money.  Live each day with priority to spend and invest your money into your health, and the health of your children, dental and body health, and caring for others and being giving to the less fortunate.  Do not live a risky life just so you can create a huge property, materialistic or money portfolio! Teach your children to rely on and trust in Yahweh for their future, for their shelter, food etc, not teach them to rely on and trust in property, materialism and money to take care of them.

“And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?” – Mark 8:36

“No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both Yahweh and money.” –  Luke 16:13

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth…But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…” – Matthew 6:19-20

There is an important reason why the Creator warned against planning to create wealth on this Earth at the expense of doing righteousness for your family and others, so we should all take heed and always do the righteous thing with the income we receive.  Having too much wealth, materialism and properties traps us into never being able to give it up or turn our backs on it, hence it becomes your idol and god!

I actually have a personal friend who is very wealthy, $10 million worth in properties, drives a Lamborghini and lives in a multi million dollar house, lives an expensive lifestyle.  The properties and money has become his god, he breaks the Sabbath too as Saturdays are the biggest real estate days.  He is not interested in Yahweh or Scriptures, he is too busy focusing on his properties and money. I grew up knowing others like this too as our family had personal friends who are very wealthy, but none of them are passionate about Yahweh or Scriptures!  I cannot recall a single time growing up where they talked about the Scriptures. We cannot become like this!

Health, helping others, and salvation comes before your property, materialistic and money goals!  And if Yahweh is blessing you with an income, it’s what you do with that income that matters, placing it towards your health, children, helping the needy and salvation and storing up riches in heaven and not on Earth!  Don’t be tricked by Satan to store your riches up here on Earth!
